SGO Designer Glass
Paul Johnson and Bonnie Winkle

by Diane Meeks
"At SGO we take care of our clients and give them personal attention; we want them to return and refer others to us.”
Paul and Marlene Johnson, Bonnie WinklePaul Johnson, a teacher, and his sister, Bonnie Winkle, a registered nurse, recently found themselves unemployed. Rather than look for work in their field, the siblings decided to take a risk and searched for business opportunities in the Toledo area. “Anytime you go into business and leave a career, it's a risk. You just have to bite the bullet and try it,” advises Paul.

Bonnie explains, “After six months of extensive franchise research, we decided on SGO Designer Glass.” Paul adds, “This was the most intriguing business, and, after a thorough research of the market place, we felt as though Toledo, the ‘Glass Capital of the World,’ needed a custom architectural and designer glass company in the area.”

Starting a new business can be tough, especially in the beginning years; however, with Bonnie and Paul’s varied backgrounds, they knew they could be successful. All along the process both Bonnie and Paul knew that customer service was an important part of their business. Paul states, “We wanted a business where we could develop long-term relationships with our customers.” Paul also states, “At SGO we take care of our clients and give them personal attention; we want them to return and refer others to us”. That is why the motto at SGO Designer Glass is “We put the ‘CUSTOM’ in ‘Customer’.”

As part of a large franchise, Bonnie and Paul can provide a wide range of specialty glass. Paul explains it like this: “Some people come in knowing exactly what they want. They'll bring a picture and want it duplicated on glass. A lot of people have new windows for energy efficiency, but they still want the old leaded look. Other homeowners do not have designer glass in their kitchen cabinets but would love to show off some nice china pieces. At SGO Designer Glass, we have the ability to do all that and then some.”

SGO Designer Glass SGO designer Marlene Johnson can create beautiful designs, and with Marlene’s guidance, the customer can build the design; pick out colors, textures and bevels; and visualize the piece on the computer before it is put together. Paul states, “Marlene helps the customers with their designs so the final piece suites their style and will be enjoyed for years to come. The uniqueness of our designs is above everyone else.”
SGO Designer Glass customers can take home samples to make design decisions in their home environment. This service is also available to designers; builders and remodelers can do the same for their customers.

As a new company, the owners have to wear many hats in the daily operation of the business. Marlene laughs as she explains who handles the installation. “You're looking at them.”

Although the business is still relatively new, they have high expectations for the future. "We'd really like to branch out into the commercial market more,” says Bonnie. Although they have had some success with churches, medical offices and restaurants, they would like to explore the market further.

“Our goal is to build strong relationships with people in the building and remodeling market, and, as the market realizes all the applications for glass products, I’m certain our business will grow to be very successful.”
