Salon 308
Ellen Armitage

by Barbara L. Roose
"It is important to have women with personalities that gel together. I have a fantastic group of girls right now and we work together as a team. Everyone helps each other, and this is what we need in order to make it work.”
Ellen ArmitageMaumee native Ellen Armitage wasn’t thinking about owning a business when she began styling hair years ago. After high school, Ellen received her cosmetology training and thought she would do hair until something else better came along. She stopped styling hair after marrying and having her first two children. When her husband wasn’t able to work because of a healthcare-related matter, however, Ellen went back into the salon to earn additional money for her family. She enjoyed her work immensely.

When the woman Ellen was working for decided to let her lease end without renewing, Ellen realized that she was about to lose the friendships and camaraderie that had grown so important to her over the years. So she made her five co-workers a proposition: “I said, ‘Girls, if I can find a place for the salon and I buy the equipment and move it, would you stay with me.’ And they said ‘yes.’”

Ellen opened her first salon in the 100 block of West Wayne Street in Maumee. The shop was called Creative Curl, and, at the time, Ellen had room for six stylists. The location, however, was plagued with numerous issues. In 1998, Ellen moved her business to its Conant Street location. It’s a move that Ellen has never regretted. “I love this location. It is bright. It is on the main street and a real boost to our business.”

Ellen operates Salon 308 as a booth rental salon. She believes that this operational style is better than having salaried employees because she doesn’t micromanage a staff and, therefore, she can also enjoy styling clients without the employee-management headaches.

Salon 308 Although Ellen doesn’t have to deal with salaried staffing issues, she does have to navigate and manage personality issues. “Probably the toughest part of my job is working with the different girls that are coming and going. It is important to have women with personalities that gel together. I have a fantastic group of girls right now and we work together as a team. Everyone helps each other, and this is what we need in order to make it work.”

After several decades in the hair industry, Ellen recently decided to invest in laser technology to be used on people who suffer from male-pattern baldness or estrogen-related hair loss.

“Laser technology is totally new to our industry,” begins Ellen. “It’s been around for about 40 years, but it has only been used in the hair industry for about 5 years. The laser stimulates the blood flow at the scalp level. One kind of hair laser, the HairMax Comb, has been approved by the FDA to help re-grow hair for all adults.”

Ellen and her staff offer free consultations to potential clients. Clients are treated with laser therapy twice a week for 6-12 months. The length of time before hair is enhanced varies, but results are recognized faster in younger versus older people. “At first, this treatment is a little more expensive. However, in the long run, a person’s actual hair is enhanced. This is a cosmetic remedy that will improve appearance.”

Although the HairMax Comb is one of the more recognized brands on the market, Ellen points out that the hair laser at Salon 308 has eight times as many dials as the HairMax Comb. Ellen is excited about the potential impact of this treatment. “This is so exciting, and I researched and researched and read before I made this major investment. But I think that it is going to be worth it and help so many people.”
