Quick Fit
Dale Sheppard
by Sue LaPointe
"Dale
always 'had some kind of vision of having my own place,
doing it [my] own way.' Over the years, he learned
a lot about the hang-ups people have about fitness.”
Born
and raised in Toledo, Dale Sheppard had a typical
upbringing. With three sisters and one brother, he
stayed busy throughout school playing baseball and
football. Dale described himself as a skinny kid,
so he got into working out in order to “stop
being skinny”.
In 1992, Dale went into the Marine Corps, and, while
in the Corps, he lived in North Carolina, California
and, finally, South Carolina. Dale credits the Marine
Corps for teaching him how to stay in shape.
After leaving the Marines, Dale decided to get a membership
at Bally Total Fitness Club. He always thought it
would be fun and rewarding to become a personal trainer,
and so he went to work for Bally’s. While working
part time at Bally's, Dale obtain degrees in dietetic
sciences and athletic training. He worked at Bally’s
until March of 2007.
Dale has witnessed substantial changes in the fitness
club industry over the years. While he was a personal
trainer at Bally's, Dale always “had some kind
of vision of having my own place, doing it [my] own
way.” Over the years, he learned a lot about
the hang-ups people have about fitness, whether they
feel that it is boring and monotonous, it takes too
long or that people feel they don’t have enough
knowledge to work out effectively.
While at Bally’s, Dale maxed out the top rank
as a trainer, even obtaining high performance honors
in the nation on a few different occasions; however,
Dale didn’t want to work even more hours or
get into management. Dale decided to go into business
for himself and opened Quick Fit in December 2006.
Quick Fit is located on the corner of Sylvania and
King Road. He chose this location because of traffic
patterns of potential clients as well as the proximity
to his own home, and Dale feels that the other stores
help draw traffic into his club.
Although Dale’s main interest is fitness, the
administrative portion of Quick Fit’s business
isn’t a struggle for him to handle. Drawing
on his previous experiences in the industry, along
with using a good computer program for finances, Dale
is pleased with his ability to manage his business
well. One family member performs data entry, and he
uses an accountant who handles the books and does
the taxes.
Quick Fit offers many different kinds of membership
plans, including a month-to-month option for individuals
who do not want to be locked in to a long-term contract.
He is able to use his academic training to integrate
nutrition counseling with every membership. One unique
incentive that Quick Fit offers is the Paid to Lose
Program. New members can weigh in when they join,
and then weigh again after three months. Dale will
pay each member for losing weight, with the potential
to earn back their enrollment fees.
Dale encourages others who feel maxed out at their
current position to consider starting a business.
He hopes to have the opportunity to franchise more
Quick Fit locations in the Toledo area and beyond
in the near future. QUICK
