For
Kristen Palmer, a childhood lemonade stand led to
greater entrepreneurial opportunities. Steven Nixon,
the father of a childhood friend, is now her real-life
business partner as she runs the PURE All Natural
Gluten-Free Bake Shoppe in Sylvania.
A graduate of Southview High School, Kristen attended
Ohio University in Athens where, in 2004, she received
her bachelor’s degree in fine arts with a specialization
in photography.
After college, Kristen came to a crossroads. “I
decided I could either go to graduate school or I
could go to New York and explore photography,”
explained Kristen. “My choice was New York,
so I moved there in the fall of 2005.”
Soon, Kristen landed a job with a food photographer,
managing his studio and gaining experience in prop
styling. Although she was somewhat disappointed with
the photography process, she discovered an interest
in food styling and began to consider culinary school.
She enrolled in New York’s Natural Gourmet Institute
and completed the intense four-month summer program
in 2006. Through the program and her culinary internships,
Kristen learned about organic products and how food
can support different health problems, and she acquired
hands-on experience in gluten-free baking. She developed
an interest in this style of baking and enjoyed the
challenge of conducting experiments to create delicious
gluten-free foods.
In 2007, Kristen returned to Toledo and obtained a
job with Claudia’s Natural Food Market, making
many of the gluten-free and vegan foods. When longtime
family friend Steven Nixon learned about what Kristen
was doing, he offered to provide the capital for Kristen’s
own business.
In July 2008, PURE All Natural Gluten-Free Bake Shoppe
opened its doors.
Through the bakery as well as a booth at the Perrysburg
Farmer’s Market, Kristen delivers everything
from breads and cookies to cakes and pizza crusts
to customers who desire gluten-free items.
In addition to gluten-free baked goods, Kristen uses
95% organic, all-natural ingredients, no refined sugars
or highly refined fats. In addition, PURE offers dairy-free
and egg-free foods, as well as low-sugar and sugar-free
products.
