Farmers
Insurance
Rick Reichow
by Sue LaPointe
"The
most important lesson Rick says he learned from his
parents was customer service. Rick says he learned
that “people wanted to be treated with respect.”
Another lesson he learned from his parents is the
necessity to work hard."
"I
enjoy the company, first and foremost,” Rick
says, placing emphasis on the company’s heavy
focus on customers and agents. “For a large
company of our size, that’s very hard to do.
Farmers’ motto is that we ‘get you back
where you belong,’ and it rings true every day.
Farmers received the JD Power & Associates awards
for the past three years in a row.”
Rick
Reichow got involved with Farmers Insurance in October
2007. Being involved in a small business, however,
wasn’t new to him.
Rick grew up in a family of entrepreneurs. His parents,
Cathy and Dan Reichow, owners of Dan R’s Automotive,
were often away from home, working to build their
business.
Rick and his brother didn’t see their parents
often; the boys were often left to “fend for
themselves” and help take care of their younger
sister. Somewhere in the middle of high school, though,
Rick says his parents became more involved, like attending
the boys’ football games.
At 14, Rick began working for his parents in their
car detail shop. After high school, Rick was ready
to make some changes in his life. One reason Rick
decided to leave home was to have a personal relationship
with his parents instead of just a business one. In
addition, Rick wanted to be on his own. He went to
Urbana on a football scholarship, with the intent
to concentrate on business and accounting. During
college, he returned home from Urbana to work summers
in his parents’ car rental business.
The most important lesson Rick says he learned from
his parents was customer service. Rick says he learned
that “people wanted to be treated with respect.”
Another lesson he learned from his parents is the
necessity to work hard.
Rick graduated from college in 2003 and then returned
home to help out with the family business once more.
A year later, Rick decided to go to graduate school
and obtained a master’s degree in accounting
from the University of Toledo in May 2007. Two weeks
after graduating, he married his wife, Lauren. Rick
realized it was time to make some decisions about
his life.
After deciding he had maxed out his income at his
parents’ business, Rick set out to find something
new. He had two opportunities to choose from: New
York Life or Farmers Insurance. Rick decided to go
to work for Farmers Insurance. “I
enjoy the company, first and foremost,” Rick
says, placing emphasis on the company’s heavy
focus on customers and agents. “For a large
company of our size, that’s very hard to do.
Farmers’ motto is that we ‘get you back
where you belong,’ and it rings true every day.
Farmers received the JD Power & Associates awards
for the past three years in a row.”
Although Rick is not yet an independent agent, he
is on track toward this goal. He met the company’s
first phase in just 30 days–most reserve agents
(the company’s term for a new agent) take 90-120
days. Rick is now a career agent and working toward
his next set of career goals.
Eventually, Rick hopes to specialize in commercial
and financial service products while still placing
an emphasis on home, auto and life insurance. He feels
that working for his parents helped give him perspective
on small-business owners.
