Collective
Hair Design Studio
Alicia Moore
by Sue LaPointe
"Alicia
believes that Toledo’s economic development
department is an excellent resource for first-time
business owners. “The people down there are
really, really helpful,” says Alicia.”
Alicia
Moore, owner of Collective Hair Design Studio, comes
from a large family with a big entrepreneurial spirit.
The youngest of 12 children, this hairstylist and
businesswoman has been hard at work since the age
of 6. Alicia started her career in her mother’s
restaurant, where Alicia took orders and ran the cashier
register.
Career-minded since day one, Alicia grew up wanting
to be a pediatrician. “My grandmother used to
buy me books about the medical profession all the
time,” remembers Alicia. After spending two
years working for her childhood pediatrician, however,
Alicia realized that it was not the profession for
her.
Finding the right profession wasn’t tough; in
fact, Alicia was already doing it. While working for
the pediatrician, Alicia was always fixing hair or
doing nails, so attending the beauty academy after
high school was an easy decision.
In 1993, Alicia started beauty school. Before owning
her own salon, Alicia worked for a couple of chains,
including Regis and Aveda.
Eventually, Alicia found her way to Collective Hair
Design Studio. Immediately, Alicia felt it was a special
place. “When I came here to work, I just fell
in love with a group of people that really got along
with each other.”
As her career as a hairstylist progressed, Alicia
began setting clear goals for herself. “I said
by the time I turned 35 I would really like to be
in business for myself.” It turns out that her
dream came true even earlier. When the owners of Collective
Hair Design Studio decided to sell, Alicia saw a golden
opportunity and decided very quickly to buy the salon.
Alicia believes that Toledo’s economic development
department is an excellent resource for first-time
business owners, like herself. “The people down
there are really, really helpful,” says Alicia.
For Alicia, the whole process took about a year. The
time and effort involved is one reason Alicia advises
aspiring business owners to stay committed. “Be
very, very serious about what you want to do. It’s
a process.”
Owning and running her own business has helped Alicia
grow as a person. She had to overcome her fears and
stay strong during an intense and grueling process.
“You have your occasional bump and bruise,”
says Alicia. But she admits that she loves every minute
of what she does.
