Bellissimo
Hair Sensation
Cathy Goodell
by Barbara L. Roose
"Ten
years ago, Cathy decided to go into business for herself;
a year ago, she opened a second salon, Classica Hair
Studio. Due to the tightening of the credit market,
it was a little more difficult to get a loan.”
"Most
of Cathy’s staff has been with her since she
opened, and that loyalty isn’t lost on Cathy.
“I’m a fun person to work for,”
she says. “I really don’t have a lot of
rules other than "If you make a mess, clean it
up." I’m not always that easiest person
to get a long with, but since they’ve been with
me for a long time, I must not be so bad,” she
smiles. “I have a bunch of nice girls in here.
God love ‘em, and I love them all, and I’d
like to thank them for all of their support.”
When
Cathy Goodell decided to open her own hair salon 10
years ago, she picked a name that reflected her Italian
roots … Bellissimo Hair Sensation. Bellissimo
means “beautiful” in Italian, and that’s
how Cathy hopes her customers feel when they leave
her salon.
Born in Chicano, Italy, a little village about 60
miles from Rome, Cathy grew up surrounded by a large
family enjoying the beauty of the Italian countryside.
When asked about her childhood memories, Cathy laughs:
“I always got into trouble.” Most of her
extended family is still in Italy, but her parents
immigrated to the United States almost five decades
ago. On her first day of school, Cathy didn’t
know a single word of English, arriving at school
with only a dictionary.
Eventually, Cathy’s family came to Toledo’s
East Side and attended Cardinal Stritch High School.
She transferred to Whitney High School downtown and
learned hair styling. After graduating from Whitney,
Cathy began working full time in the hair business
and was relieved to be done with school.
Ten years ago, Cathy decided to go into business for
herself; a year ago, she opened a second salon, Classica
Hair Studio. Due to the tightening of the credit market,
it was a little more difficult to get a loan.
Classica Hair Studio is located in Sylvan Square near
Brint and McCord Roads. Cathy wanted to open a store
for her daughter, who was also in the hair business.
“She’s like her mother,” explains
Cathy. “She doesn’t necessarily like taking
orders from other people, so I decided to open a shop
she could run.” Cathy refrains from working
at Classica; rather, she just enjoys visiting and
cleaning at the shop from time to time.
Both salons are booth rental, a management style Cathy
prefers. Bellissimo Hair Sensation has 18 occupied
booths in the 2600-square-foot salon, which has the
capacity for 21 stylists. “We like it because
it is spacious, not cramped. The stylists like it
because I am a cleaning fanatic.”
Most of Cathy’s staff has been with her since
she opened, and that loyalty isn’t lost on Cathy.
“I’m a fun person to work for,”
she says. “I really don’t have a lot of
rules other than "If you make a mess, clean it
up." I’m not always that easiest person
to get a long with, but since they’ve been with
me for a long time, I must not be so bad,” she
smiles. “I have a bunch of nice girls in here.
God love ‘em, and I love them all, and I’d
like to thank them for all of their support.”
