Brink’s Custom Homes, Inc.

"With
my hands-on experience, I have been able to also take
remodeling jobs. That’s where the framing and
finish training was a big asset for me because I can
go in and tear something out without needing a subcontractor
to come in and redo it.”
Builder Josh Brinks never planned on being a farmer,
even though he grew up in the rural family community
of Liberty Center, Ohio. One of four boys in his family,
Josh spent his growing years playing football and
wrestling for Liberty Center High School. “I
played sports because there wasn’t much else
to do. You could do sports or you could be in trouble.”
After graduating from high school, Josh went to college
and joined the Army National Guard and began working
for a local framer. During this time, Josh was able
to hone his skills, and, eventually, he was ready
to go into business for himself. But, with a wife
and new baby at home, Josh was understandably nervous.
Still, he took a chance. In March 2004, Josh launched
Brink’s Custom Homes, Inc. to build homes in
Southern Michigan and Northwest Ohio.
Josh entered the home-building market at the height
of the building frenzy and worked with a small lender
to finance his start-up. He began with building two
homes on spec and did much of the work himself. Considering
the steep learning curve, Josh was thrilled when those
two homes broke even for him financially.
Now, with a number of completed homes under his belt,
Josh is comfortable with the progression of his business.
While observing the business practices of other builders,
Josh made a commitment to his customers to personally
oversee the construction of their home. Therefore,
Josh is at each building site at least once a day.
“It takes too much away from you if you aren’t
there every day. Things can get covered up and cause
problems later in the project.”
Even though the home-building market has slowed dramatically,
Josh believes his experience as a framer and finish
carpenter is helping him to grow during the slowdown
in the market. “For me and most builders, spec
houses are pretty much out because there is a lot
of inventory out on the market and people have too
much to choose from. Since I am a smaller business,
I can be a lot more flexible. With my hands-on experience,
I have been able to also take remodeling jobs. That’s
where the framing and finish training was a big asset
for me because I can go in and tear something out
without needing a subcontractor to come in and redo
it.”
Josh places a high priority on finding opportunities
to promote his business. Not only is he a member of
the Home Builders Association (HBA), Josh also credits
one organization, Business Networking International
(BNI), with being very helpful in finding remodeling
work. Although the opportunity to grow his business
is always Josh’s ultimate goal, he is concerned
about maintaining his customers’ trust and giving
each job the personal touch needed.
Still, Josh is thankful that his business is growing
and changing in the midst of a tumultuous market.
“It’s been pretty good. I’ve been
pretty lucky.
