Johnathon
Bush
By Barbara L. Roose
|
“…When
he was 7, Johnathon decided to establish an office
and began to make calls on family members. Someone
made him business cards, and he would call people
and talk with them.”
Meet
Johnathon Bush. This young man began baking for family
a few years ago and couldn’t wait to get a job
in a bakery. When Johnathon realized he was too young
to work in a regular bakery, he decided to launch
his own business, Not Just Cookies.
Johnathon was born and raised in Toledo into a family
with one brother and two sisters. His mother, Rosemarie
Bush, is tremendously proud of Johnathon’s entrepreneurial
spirit. She believes that Johnathon has always had
an eye for business, even if others might have found
him a bit peculiar.
“He was kinda of a funny kid,” remembers
Rosemarie with a smile. “Johnathon would wear
suits when no one else was wearing them. When he was
7, Johnathon decided to establish an office and began
to make calls on family members. Someone made him
business cards, and he would call people and talk
with them.”
“I had too much time on my hands,” smiles
Johnathon shyly.
Before his cookie business, Johnathon embarked upon
other juvenile money-makers like walking dogs, selling
lemonade and raking leaves. His gift for sales surfaced
early as Johnathon was a perennial top seller for
his school fundraisers. With Johnathon’s outgoing
personality, Rosemarie believes that he isn’t
afraid to approach people to sell them something.
When Johnathon started Not Just Cookies, he made a
decision to use all-natural ingredients, and instead
of using aluminum cookie sheets, Johnathon uses baking
stones. He likes the fact that the baking stones heat
to the same temperature as his oven, which lends to
more even baking.
Since Johnathon’s been in business, his main
customers have been his family members and people
from school and church. Recently, Johnathon took his
cookies over to the owner of a yet-to-be-opened café.
The new owner likes Johnathon’s baked goods,
and the owner and Johnathon have a tentative agreement
to feature his baked goods when the business opens.
In an effort to expand his sales base, Johnathon has
approached several area businesses to market his cookies.
He is still working on gaining his first big account,
but Johnathon knows that one day he will hit his golden
opportunity. Right now, Johnathon is looking for his
niche market and will sell to anyone until he finds
it. Of course, it seems Johnathon likes a good challenge.
In June, he was selling his cookies at a booth at
the Old West End Festival. When the traffic began
to sway away from his area, Johnathon grabbed his
cousin and they began to go into the crowd to sell
cookies person-to-person. “We sold them all,”
reports Johnathon with a smile.
Computer-savvy, Johnathon oversaw the supervision
of Not Just Cookies’ website. Visitors to the
website have the opportunity to view Johnathon’s
complete product list and place their orders. Of course,
there are more than just cookies available for purchase.
Although Johnathon won’t brag about it, Rosemarie
reveals that Johnathon is very good at handling the
financial end of his business and is careful with
each bakery purchase.
With two years as a business owner under his belt,
Johnathon would like to keep expanding Not Just Cookies.
Of course, this young entrepreneur hasn’t ruled
out college. Luckily, Johnathon has a cookie business
and that just might help him pay for it.
