Health Associates of Sylvania
Dr.
Bill Huntzinger, D.D.S.
By Barbara L. Roose
|
“There
were days when I first started that I would sit and
read the paper and hope that someone would call and
give me a chance to use the skills I have spent the
last nine years to develop.”
In the near future, Dental Health Associates is planning
to expand its on-site laboratory business statewide
to offer other dentists in the region the same high-quality
work that is available to their patients.
It
was in the eighth grade while doing research for his
“career book” that Bill Huntzinger, a
native of Middletown, Ohio, decided that he wanted
to become a dentist. Most of Bill’s family worked
for Armco Steel, now known as AK Steel. In fact, Bill’s
paternal grandfather left the family farm in Indiana
to come to Middletown, and his mother’s father
had left Bulgaria to come to Middletown to find a
better life. They both took jobs with Armco, and they
both raised their families in Middletown and never
regretted leaving the farm or the “old country.”
They wanted the American Dream.
“I was fortunate to grow up having so many of
my relatives around, they all knew the value of hard
work and getting a good education.” Bill’s
parents encouraged both he and his two sisters to
do better. “When we were in elementary school,
my sisters and I had to go the library every week.
My mother believed that books would expand our knowledge
of the world,” remembers Bill.
Just like many others, Bill’s first exposure
to dentistry was having his teeth cleaned and checked.
Bill’s Aunt Martha worked as a dental assistant
in that office, and Bill was able to learn more about
dentistry by talking with her and his dentist.
As Bill did the research about dentistry for his career
book, he realized that dentistry could be interesting
and fun work to do. The dentist explained to Bill
that if he liked people, could think and figure out
how to fix things, and was willing to work hard for
nine years, then Bill could become a dentist. Bill
had to work with his father on many fix-up projects
around the house and on the family cars. “I
was good mechanically,” and his parents had
made sure that hard work was the norm.” I passed
newspapers, mowed lawns, worked at McDonalds and did
my share of chores around the house.”
After high school, Bill was offered a scholarship
and a job at a small college in Missouri; however,
things didn’t start off well. After a semester
away, Bill was homesick and failing most of his courses.
“I will never forget that my father never yelled;
he just looked me in the eye and said, ‘I really
believe you can do better.’” After rallying
to finish his freshman year in good standing, Bill
transferred to Ohio State University and completed
his undergraduate degree.
Before he could be a dentist, Bill had to get into
dental school. He applied to more than 15 dental schools,
but things weren’t working out and Bill received
numerous rejection letters. On April 1, 1976, however,
Bill received an acceptance letter from Case Dental
School near Cleveland, Ohio, and he was delighted.
He moved to the Cleveland area for his professional
dental training, but Bill returned to Middletown each
summer during dental school to work in the steel mill
or a local country bar. His work in the open hearth
kept Bill’s motivation to continue school.
In 1981, Bill completed his residency and moved to
the Northwest Ohio area. At the time there were a
lot of dentists graduating from schools and very few
jobs, and he felt fortunate to find a job with a dentist
in Swanton. Bill’s career as a dentist, however,
almost ended as quickly as it began. During his first
year of practice in Swanton, he suffered a traumatic
fracture of his right index finger due to a cyst in
that finger. He thought that his dental career could
be over before it started. As it turned out, due to
the skill of a local hand surgeon, Bill was able to
return to work in three months.
Bill worked with another dentist for about a year
or so when he decided it was time to open his own
practice in Swanton, Dental Health Associates. As
the young new dentist in town, it took some time to
build his practice. Those were the years he and his
staff would sit and hope the phone would ring and
someone would come in. Over the years, the practice
grew, and, now, Dental Health Associates is one of
the largest dental practices in Fulton County. Bill,
or “Doc H” as he is known by most of his
patients, gives much of the credit for his success
to the great support of his wife and the incredible
staff he has had working for him over the years. Many
of them have been with the office for more than 20
years.
Bill’s practice offers general dentistry as
well as other services, including orthodontics, implant
dentistry, IV sedation, cosmetic dentistry and children’s
dentistry. There are also televisions for patients
to watch while they are having their dental work completed
and a Star Trek pinball machine in the reception.
Yes, Bill loves Star Trek and Star Wars, and he also
loves all of the latest technology available to dentists,
such as digital x-rays and dental lasers.
Early in his career, Bill had an office in Sylvania,
but closed it after a few years. About 10 years ago,
he had the opportunity to purchase a dental practice
from a retiring dentist in the Toledo area. In 2006,
Dental Health Associates of Sylvania added five more
offices and consolidated those practices into a 7,000
sq. ft. state-of-the-art dental office near the corner
of Sylvania and King Roads. Several of these dentists
still consult in the office and actively participate
in local service organizations.
Many dental offices outsource laboratory-related services;
however, Toledo is fortunate to have many fine dental
labs that make local dentist’s crowns and bridges,
which eliminates the possible danger of Chinese-made
crowns that may contain lead. Dental Health Associates
has taken the extra step to have an on-site lab, which
allows for custom shading of crowns. For Bill, performing
those services onsite allows greater quality control
and fulfills his passion for making sure that his
practice implements the cutting-edge technologies
that will benefit his patients.
In the near future, Dental Health Associates is planning
to expand its on-site laboratory business statewide
to offer other dentists in the region the same high-quality
work that is available to their patients. Bill is
also a founder of HJT Design Group, which designs
state-of-the-art dental offices, and he is also working
with a Detroit-area technology company, developing
electronic records for dental offices that will eliminate
all paper in those offices.
In the last 26 years, Dental Health Associates has
grown from a small office with a few patients and
four staff members to a three-office practice with
more than 50 staff members and thousands of patients.
“Northwest Ohio is a great place to live and
raise a family, and the people living here are the
friendliest I have ever met,” states Dr H. “I
have been very fortunate to have family, friends and
employees that started and kept me going in the right
direction, taught me to set goals and ingrained in
me the will to succeed. I have been able to learn
from those who have gone before me through reading,
attending courses and listening twice as much as I
speak. God gave us two ears and one mouth for a reason.”
