Mike
and Karen say up to 30% of their members use the gym
during the non-conventional hours of 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.
After college, he entered the Marine Corps, where
he helped the counterterrorism unit he commanded fine
tune its fitness regimen.
America
has lost its last excuse for being out of shape. Claiming
the gym doesn’t have convenient hours is no
longer true. Believing that all fitness centers are
big and intimidating isn’t valid either. And
the notion that you have to pay for extras you’ll
never use, like saunas and pools–well, that
argument just doesn’t hold water.
That’s because Anytime Fitness has arrived,
and members have 24-hour access to conveniently located
facilities and aren’t charged for unwanted add-ons.
According to co-owner Mike Owens, “The whole
concept of Anytime Fitness was designed around a checklist
of excuses that people have, and going down and eliminating
them.”
Mike Owens and his fiancé, Karen Beamish, have
opened two Anytime Fitness locations in Perrysburg
and Lambertville. They have plans for a third location.
Anytime Fitness features smaller, more intimate facilities
typically located in strip malls, and Karen and Mike
say it’s a perfect fit for people who are intimidated
by larger gyms. “Folks are afraid of showing
their ignorance about exercise, or they feel they
need to be in shape before they actually join the
gym,” said Mike. “The atmosphere here
is such that many of our members say, ‘I just
really feel like I can come in and be myself.’”
Mike and Karen say up to 30% of their members use
the gym during the non-conventional hours of 9 p.m.
to 6 a.m. “On weekends that percentage actually
goes up,” said Mike, “because most gyms
have very limited hours on weekends.”
Members get a key fob so they can let themselves in
when the gym isn’t staffed. A high-tech security
system can detect if anyone tries to sneak in, and
24-hour cameras monitor all of the activity. “We
see everything on the computer,” said Karen.
“We can tell who came in, what time, what day,
how often.”
Anytime Fitness also has personal trainers on staff,
all of whom have some background in fitness and many
of whom have four-year degrees. All members receive
two free personal training sessions and can purchase
additional instruction in half-hour increments.
There is a reciprocity agreement between all of the
Anytime Fitness franchisees. There are about 1,800
centers either in operation or in the works, and members
have free access to any location nationwide, free
of charge. “If someone travels or goes on vacation,”
said Karen, “they can walk up to any single
one of these locations, swipe their little keycard
and walk in as if that’s their own gym.”
It’s no surprise that Karen and Mike find themselves
in the industry–they’ve been fitness buffs
most of their lives. Karen was director of sports
medicine at a prominent Toledo clinic for 10 years
and built a program that eventually provided service
for 15 area high schools and the Toledo Storm hockey
club. She also worked at the 1988 Calgary Games, serving
the Canadian bobsled and American luge teams.
Mike recalls reading all of the “muscle magazines”
while growing up and always having an interest in
health and nutrition. After college, he entered the
Marine Corps, where he helped the counterterrorism
unit he commanded fine tune its fitness regimen.
Karen and Mike met in 2004 while working for a pharmaceutical
company. Now business partners, they’re taking
their passion for fitness to the Northwest Ohio community.
